A casual job position and need an ABN?

I've never worked for someone as a contractor, which I'm assuming I am since I need an ABN. Is this a dodgy or crappy way to work? It's a work at home position using my own computer where I get paid a certain amount for every task I complete per day. Just wondering if it's worthwhile? Do I need to do my own tax?
