My father has very bad arthritis pain in his knee. Can anyone help?

He has tried all the medical ways of helping but to no avail. Pills injections etc. He has been told he cannot have a new knee because he is too old and has a dodgy ticker (he is 87). Can anyone suggest anything that may help. Would a TENS machine help etc.
